Neuroscience: Phonological Processing and its Effects on Learning to Read - Dr. Paual Tallal

"What happens to you when you can’t trust your own brain to take care of this for you? What are the kind of defense mechanisms you might develop? Attention problems, impulsivity, acting out, being the class clown - anything is better in many ways for your self esteem and sense of well being than believing that you can’t trust yourself to even process the information in your world. That’s very scary.  So, I think that you develop these other mechanisms."

20 Percent of Scientists Admit Using Brain-Enhancing Drugs -- Do You? | Wired Science from Wired.com

"This post is about the classical dopaminergic/noradrenergic stimulants - primarily methylphenidate and amphetamine. Is there any evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) that they enhance cognition per se rather than just temporarily: - Increased motivation, goal-directed behaviour and sense of meaning and urgency. - Increased self-esteem. - Massively increased desire to communicate ;) - Perceived enhancement of your cognitive skill (related to increase in self-esteem). - Improved performance on routine tasks and improving reaction time. - Increased wakefulness and perceived physical energy. - Mood lift. Depression can certainly be an obstacle to work. Note that this usage in particular has the potential to go horribly wrong... - Liking the drug for the above effects, and ascribing actual cognitive enhancement to the drug because you want that to also be true. I don't mean this in a judgemental way at all; it's just something to consider."
