The Humor of Jesus of Nazareth
"The puzzle for God's sense of humor might go like this: Could God tell a joke so funny that even he would laugh? The answer is "yes" because there is no limit to how funny God can be, and "no" because God would already know the punch line. I offer this mind-teaser half in jest and half in earnest. To recognize that Jesus laughed may require rethinking traditional ideas about deity."Well, yeah. Knowing the punchline to your jokes doesn't make them less funny! Although with time's arrow we can surprise ourselves as we assemble our humor. But even a timeless deity could perfectly perceive -- and surely, appreciate -- the patterns that define comedy. (Some might say that being a wit requires a degree of omniscience!)
